Ensō Circles

The practice of simple brushing a circle in one stroke is powerful and revealing from any perspective. In Zen calligraphy, the Ensō Circle expresses the totality of our being. It is a direct expression of this moment as it is our willingness to be completely present on the dot. Zen Buddhists draw this circle again and again as a form of practice. Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen, described this experience as

“A special transmission outside the scriptures,
With no reliance on words and letters
A direct pointing to the human mind,
And the realization of enlightenment.”
